PLSD Letter to Families-Phased Reopening Plan

PURCHASE LINE SCHOOL DISTRICT

Office of the Superintendent, Shawn L. Ford

October 20, 2020

Dear Purchase Line Families:

We hope that this letter finds you and your family doing well and staying healthy as we continue to navigate our daily lives in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.  We want to thank you for your cooperation and support during these turbulent times, as well as for your patience as we continue to strive to provide a safe environment and related options for our students to continue to learn and grow.  The purpose of this letter is to provide information to students, parents/guardians, and families regarding our Phased Reopening to In-School Instruction that was approved by the school board on October 12, 2020.

The reopening plan will begin on November 5 and will be completed by December 7, assuming the current conditions, mandates, and orders stay as they are.  There is a  timeline we are including at the end of this letter that we intend to follow.  Having worked through our initial phase from March-June and then evaluating the opening weeks of the current school year, we believe that the Phased Reopening to In-School Instruction will provide for the most effective educational process that we can provide until that time when all of our students are back in school with the teachers in the classrooms across the PLSD. Please read below for more specific information.

Phased Reopening to In-School Instruction

  • Declaring Intentions: October 26 - October 30, 2020

    1. Defining the Phased Reopening In-School Model: 4+1 Model
      1. Students attending full-time will be in school 4 days per week (M-TH) and learning remotely 1 day per week (F).
      2. All PLSD students will be learning remotely on Fridays with additional focus placed on the following:
        1. 100% Remote Learners
        2. Struggling Learners
    2. Pre-K - 3rd Grade Students
      1. Students in 100% remote instruction remain there unless they contact Mr. Monroe, elementary principal, by October 30, 2020.
      2. Students coming to school 4 days a week remain the same.  However, students in Mrs. Fetsko’s classroom (2nd grade) and Mrs. Edwards’ classroom (3rd grade) will transition to new classrooms on the dates listed in the timeline.  These teachers will be going back to their original assigned grade levels.

    1. 4th - 6th Grade Students
      1. Students in 100% remote instruction remain there unless they contact Mr. Monroe, elementary principal, by October 30, 2020.
      2. Students currently in the hybrid model will begin in-school instruction 4 days a week on the dates listed in the timeline.  Students desiring to move from the hybrid model to 100% remote instruction must contact Mr. Monroe, elementary principal, by October 30, 2020.
      3. You will notice that 5th and 6th grade students are transitioning later.  The reason being is that we are currently advertising for 1 additional interim teacher in each grade level to help maximize social distancing.  Further, students will be moved from the current 2 classrooms in 5th grade and 3 classrooms in 6th grade to 4 classrooms in both grade levels.  This is all dependent on finding new teachers, which is a challenge at the present time.

    1. 7th - 12th Grade Students
      1. Students in 100% remote instruction remain there unless they contact Mr. Thomas, high school principal, by October 30, 2020.
      2. Students currently in the hybrid model will begin in-school instruction 4 days a week on the dates listed in the timeline.  Students desiring to move from the hybrid model to 100% remote instruction must contact Mr. Thomas, high school principal, by October 30, 2020.

Please Note:  Students will not be able to change instructional models after October 30, 2020, until the 3rd marking period except for case by case extenuating circumstances.

  • General Information Regarding Educational Programming
    1. Academic Progress
      1. Parents are encouraged to access Progress Book, located on the PLSD Website, to review student progress.
    2. Preparing for Shut-Downs and Class Quarantines
      1. Our educators will continue using the content and scope/sequence from Edgenuity and Accelerate on a daily basis.  However, they will be providing direct instruction while in school.  This does not mean that the online platforms can’t be used as a supplemental learning method or homework.  By utilizing the platforms’ scope and sequence, we can seamlessly transition students back to remote learning in the event a school is shut down or student quarantines are in place.  In addition, the online platforms will continue to be used by teachers on Fridays for student learning.
