Advanced Placement
PREREQUISITES: 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th grade English; B+ average in Advanced English 11 and Proficient or Advanced on Keystone Literature Exam
All students enrolled in the AP English Language & Composition course can complete the nationally administered Advanced Placement English Language & Composition examination in May. The student is responsible for the cost of the exam, which is lowered for students who receive free or reduced lunches.
During this course, students aim at becoming skilled readers of prose written in a variety of periods, disciplines and rhetorical contexts, and in becoming skilled writers who compose for a variety of purposes. Both their writing and their reading should make students aware of the interactions among a writer’s purposes, audience expectations and subjects as well as the way generic conventions and the resources of language contribute to effectiveness in writing.
The AP Language course assumes that students already understand and use standard English grammar. The intense concentration on language use in this course should enhance their ability to use grammatical conventions both appropriately and with sophistications as well as to develop stylistic maturity in their prose. Students must pass the summer reading quizzes at the beginning of the school year to stay in this course.
This course has been approved for Saint Francis University’s College in High School Program. Students can opt to take this course for college credit.
