District Programs / Federal Programs - Title II-A

Program Description:

Title II, Part A, is a 100% federally funded supplemental educational program that provides financial assistance to improve the skills of teachers and the quality of instruction in core academic subjects in public and private elementary and secondary schools.

Of the state allocation, 95% is used for basic education in local educational agencies, 2.5% is used for higher education competitive grants, and 2.5% is used for state activities.

Title II, Part A, combines the Eisenhower and Class-Size Reduction programs into one program that focuses on preparing, training, and recruiting and hiring highly qualified teachers.

Within our school district, Title IIA Funds are used to support teacher training with an emphasis on mathematics, science, and social studies. Administrators and support staff also participate in training that is funded through Title IIA.

Various types of training initiatives are supported. For instance, teachers may request to attend a conference through a professional organization, like the Pennsylvania Teachers of Mathematics or one of the many trainings offered regionally at Armstrong-Indiana Intermediate Unit 28 or through the University of Pittsburgh Tri-State School Study Council or IUP. Funds also support curriculum revitalization initiatives through the junior-senior high school mathematics and science departments.

Title IIA funds have supported major training initiatives in the district, like staff development and Act 80 day speakers and materials or specialized trainings, like Compass Learning Computer training or CPR/First Aid training for district employees.

With the need for school administrators, faculty, and support staff to stay up-to-date and meet the required Highly Qualified status, Title IIA funding has become more important than ever at PLSD.
